Hong Kong celebrates closer ties in Massachusetts

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has proclaimed today (October 17, 2018) as “Hong Kong Day” to recognize the strong ties between Hong Kong and the Bay State. Over 100 guests, including business and government leaders, along with Senate staffers, attended a celebratory reception at the State House.

At the reception, Hong Kong Commissioner to the US Eddie Mak highlighted the strong trade, educational and cultural ties between the two places. He pointed out that Hong Kong is the 6th largest export destination for Massachusetts. Exports to Hong Kong reached US$1.3 billion last year, a 47 per cent year-on-year increase.

Massachusetts State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Office of International Trade Mark Sullivan, Massachusetts Representatives Tackey Chan, Donald Wong, Keiko Orrall, and Rady Mom were among the dignitaries who attended the reception. Hong Kong Baroque recorder player Jasmine Ho performed a repertoire of American and Hong Kong tunes at the event.

Earlier in the day, Hong Kong Commissioner Eddie Mak called on the Speaker of the House Robert A DeLeo and exchanged views on mutual trade relations. Mr Mak also gave an update on Hong Kong's infrastructural development and the city’s role as a major wine trading hub.
