HKETONY Director's first duty visit to Florida

Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY) Ms Joanne Chu made her first duty visit to Miami, Florida from April 23 to 25 to meet with key officials and members of the business community. She also met with the leadership of Miami Film Festival where they talked about Hong Kong cinema and cross-cultural collaboration.

Earlier in the trip, Director Chu met briefly with Mayor Gimenez of Miami-Dade County after the Mayor’s Roundtable and attended eMerge Americas, a technology convention where global enterprises, leading startups and government leaders focused on innovative digital solutions transforming industries. She was in attendance at the Congressional Conversation luncheon along with U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello (R-PA) and U.S. Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL).

Director Chu was accompanied by Leo Naut, Deputy Head of Investment Promotion, Invest Hong Kong and HKETONY Senior Consultant Gene Hanratty.

Given that Miami is one of the top travel destinations in the U.S., Ms Chu also seized the opportunity to experience a VR Tour of the new Norwegian Cruise Line Terminal being built in Miami.

In addition to meeting with the Miami-Dade Beacon Council’s EVP Dyan Brassington, Ms Chu visited the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and briefed them on the latest economic development, as well as innovation and technology in Hong Kong.

She also met with Hong Kong Association of Florida chairman Robert Lee and its treasure Hernando Gomez to discuss events to engage the larger communities.

During her visit at Enterprise Florida, the official economic development organization for the State of Florida, Ms Chu talked of what HKETONY could do to help Florida companies sell their products in Asia and the benefits of Hong Kong as a platform. Ms Chu also explained on the Greater Bay Area business opportunities. Enterprise Florida’s SVP, International Trade & Development Mr Manny Mencia was in attendance.

Meeting with the Executive Director and Director of Programming Jaie Laplant, Ms Chu explored how they could help to bring Hong Kong movies to the fans through their Miami Film Festival.

Before heading back to New York, Ms Chu had a breakfast meeting with Kiernan Bowers, President of Swire Properties USA and they exchanged views on fostering closer ties between Hong Kong and Miami.
