Hong Kong's architectural achievements showcased in New York

The Hong Kong Institute of Architects’ Urbanism and Architecture Exhibitions for Excellence “Beyond Territories – Made. Make. Making”, featuring works by more than 25 local and international firms, unveiled at the Ideal Glass Studios in New York on Oct 11.  Supported by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York (HKETONY), the New York exhibition is the third stop in a six-month roving exhibition that started in Hangzhou, followed by Beijing. It will conclude in Hong Kong at the end of this year. Speaking at the opening ceremony, HKETONY Director Candy Nip said Hong Kong’s architecture embodies the city’s rich culture and cosmopolitan character, and the innovative displays of the exhibition fully epitomizes the timelessness and timeliness of the architectural achievements of Hong Kong in the past quarter-century. The exhibition is now open to members of the public through Oct 25.  

Accolades for Hong Kong actors at Busan film festival

Hong Kong movie star Tony Leung received the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award at the 27th Busan International Film Festival (Oct 6) for his significant contributions to the advancement of the Asian film industry and culture. Another Hong Kong actor – Ling Man-lung – won the Best Rising Star award in the Fourth Asia Contents Awards (Oct 8) at the same film festival. Offering his congratulations, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung said Leung’s refined skills and acting charisma have enriched the art and visual culture in the films he participated in, bringing Hong Kong movies to the world stage successfully and showcasing the city’s cultural soft power. Mr Yeung also said it is encouraging that Ling has gained worldwide recognition among his counterparts in the industry, and his success reflects Hong Kong’s remarkable achievement in film and entertainment. (Photo credit: Busan International Film Festival)

Hong Kong Cinema showcase in Chicago

Two Hong Kong actresses, Summer Chan and Jennifer Yu, will receive the “Bright Star Award”, in recognition of their respective works, during Season 15 of the Asian Pop-Up Cinema film festival in Chicago. Chan will receive the award in person at the world premiere of her film “Deliverance” on Oct 29. Yu, who is featured in “Far Far Away”, “Pretty Heart”, and “Septet: The Story of Hong Kong” will receive her award on the closing night of the festival on Nov 6. Aside from the four films listed, this season’s Hong Kong Cinema will also screen “The Narrow Road”, “The First Girl I Loved”, “Tales from the Occult” and “Rigor Mortis”, with the latter two films part of the festival’s Halloween presentation. Marco Fu: First runner-up in snooker tournament

Hong Kong athlete Marco Fu clinched the first runner-up prize at the  Hong Kong Masters 2022 in front of a world record snooker crowd of 9,000 fans inside the Hong Kong Coliseum (Oct 9). In his semi-final against four-time world champion John Higgins, Fu made a stunning 147 break to send the home fans wild. Congratulating Fu for his outstanding results, Secretary for Culture, Sports & Tourism Kevin Yeung said Fu’s achievements in the tournament hosted in the city carried a significant meaning, saying that his performance demonstrated Hong Kong spirit and powered with outstanding techniques. British seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan claimed the tournament title.

Government responds to Russia-related sanctions

In a statement on the Russia-related sanctions, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (HKSARG) explained that the city has all along been implementing and enforcing fully the sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council. However, the HKSARG does not implement, nor have the legal authority to take action on, unilateral sanctions imposed by other jurisdictions. As an international financial and trading center and closely connected with the world market, Hong Kong has a distinctive status and advantages that are internationally recognized. These strengths include the rule of law, implementation of the common law system, and internationally-aligned regulatory regimes.

Hong Kong and its Basic Law

The Basic Law is the constitutional document of the HKSAR. Put into effect on July 1, 1997, it enshrines within a legal document the important concept of “One Country, Two Systems”.

 

Q: Can foreign enterprises participate fully in Hong Kong’s economy?

A: Yes. Hong Kong welcomes and encourages the participation of foreign enterprises, and provides a level playing field for all. There are no foreign exchange controls in Hong Kong and no restrictions on the trading of gold, securities, futures and the like. The Basic Law stipulates that Hong Kong shall maintain the status of a free port, pursue the policy of free trade and safeguard the free movement of goods, intangible assets and capital.
