Gala dinner celebrates Hong Kong SAR’s 20th anniversary in style

HKETONY hosted a gala dinner in New York (June 28) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Invited guests toasted to Hong Kong’s success and were treated to a performance of a “Hong Kong Medley” by Hong Kong- and New York-based musicians and a fashion show.

In his keynote remarks, Hong Kong Commissioner to the US, Clement Leung described how Hong Kong, a “shining beacon of free trade, open markets, and the rule of law,” has always risen to the challenges it has faced, despite pessimistic predictions. He added that Hong Kong continues to succeed thanks to the principle of “One Country, Two Systems,” which, he said, “has given businesses the trust, confidence and predictability to thrive in the region.”

Welcoming the evening’s performing artists, Director of HKETONY Steve Barclay said he is glad to be a part of the growing collaboration between artists in Hong Kong and New York, “two of the world’s most exciting arts hubs.” He also noted that he will soon retire and return to Hong Kong, and thanked members of the audience for their friendship over the years.

Musical performance included the “Hong Kong Medley”, specially arranged by Hong Kong composer Patrick Lui, who flew in specially from Hong Kong for the performance. Other performing musicians included Ashley Chui, Alan Kwan, Andrew Jurden, Orlando Le Fleming and Eugene Seow. International fashion designer Vivienne Tam presented her Hong Kong-inspired “City of Lights” collection. Dignitaries present included Ambassador Liu Jieyi, the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, and Consul General of the People's Republic of China in New York,Ambassador Zhang Qiyue.
