Hong Kong film directors and actress Carrie Ng in New York

Hong Kong directors Derek Hui, Wong Chun, and Lawrence Lau, who were in New York to attend screenings of their films at the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), met with New York media at the HKETONY on July 13. They discussed what defines Hong Kong films, how the industry is faring, and whether box office receipts are important in directing a movie.

Welcoming the filmmakers, Director of HKETONY Steve Barclay said that he was pleased that the NYAFF introduced a special program this year to focus on Hong Kong’s exciting new generation of directors.

Hui, who was the youngest nominee (at age 28) in the Best Film Editing category in the Hong Kong Film Awards history, made his directorial debut with the rom-com “This is Not What I Expected” (2017). Wong’s directorial debut “Mad World” (2016) won him the Best New Director award at the Golden Horse Awards and the Hong Kong Film Awards. A new wave director in the late 1980s, Lau has made a comeback to Hong Kong cinema after a years-long hiatus with the 2016 movie “Dealer/Healer.”

On July 15, Hong Kong actress Carrie Ng and director Alan Lo met with local media at Lincoln Center, discussing the filming process, the anticipation of the film's North American premiere at the NYAFF, and their future projects. Ng and Lo were in New York for the July 16 screening of their film “Zombiology: Enjoy Yourself Tonight,” on the final night of this year’s NYAFF. Both also met with the audience after the screening.

Ng has appeared in more than 100 feature films and television series in Hong Kong and on the mainland, and was named Best Actress at the 1993 Golden Horse Film Festival and Best Supporting Actress at the 2000 Hong Kong Film Awards. Lo won the Best Cinematography Award at the FreshWave International Short Film festival for his work on “Blade of Enforcer” (2015). “Zombiology,” which was funded by the Hong Kong government’s Film Development Fund, is his debut feature film.
