Director promotes economic and trade ties in North Carolina


Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York, Steve Barclay called for closer ties between Hong Kong and North Carolina during his visit to to Raleigh and Charlotte on May 18-19.

Last year, North Carolina exported US$928 million worth of goods to Hong Kong, a 20 percent jump from 2013. The top five exports were: computer and electronic products; chemicals; food manufactures; and electrical equipment, appliances and components.

During his first visit to the Tar Heel State, Mr. Barclay met with a number of government and business leaders including: North Carolina Secretary of Commerce, John E. Skvarla, III; Mayor of Raleigh, Nancy McFarlane; President and CEO of Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, Harvey Schmitt; President and CEO of Research Triangle Regional Partnership, Charles Hayes; CEO of Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, Christopher Chung; and Vice President of Economic Development of Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Sven Gerzer. Mr. Barclay also met with President and CEO of World Affairs Council of Charlotte (WAC), Ljubomir Stambuk and Vice President of WAC, Charlotte Klopp.

During the meetings, Mr. Barclay highlighted business opportunities and advantages of doing business in Hong Kong, including the city’s strategic location, its free market economy, the rule of law, and a level playing field.

While in Charlotte, Mr. Barclay also conducted an interview with the Charlotte Observer.
