Hong Kong Ballet débuts to critical acclaim at Northrop in Minneapolis

The Hong Kong Ballet, led by Artistic Director Madeleine Onne, performed the dramatic and romantic story ballet Turandot, to critical acclaim at Northrop’s Carlson Family Stage at University of Minnesota on November 6 and 7. Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York, Mr Steve Barclay hosted a reception on November 7 to congratulate Ms. Onne and the performers and laud their talents.

Mr. Barclay said it was an honor for Hong Kong’s ballet troupe to be the first international ballet company to perform at the newly renovated Northrop on the occasion of its 35th anniversary. "I hope that with the resounding success of the Hong Kong Ballet’s performances, there will be more collaboration between the Northrop and performing arts groups in Hong Kong," said Mr Barclay.

As one of the premier classical ballet companies in Asia the Hong Kong Ballet is coming to be known as an internationally recognized, world-class institution and its production of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot turned out a stellar performance. The ballet conveyed the theme of power, lust and revenge with stunning sets, drama, and was accompanied by Puccini’s original music. Australian choreographer Natalie Weir was commissioned to usher in 40 dancers onto the stage with magnificent costumes and elaborate backdrops.
