Andrew Lau’s first Hollywood film premieres at Boston festival


Hong Kong director Andrew Lau’s first Hollywood film, “Revenge of the Green Dragons,” received applause from a packed theatere in its Boston premiere on October 23. The event was sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York (HKETONY).

Welcoming Director Mr. Lau in his first trip to Boston at the opening- night screening, , HKETONY Head of Communications and PR of HKETONY Claudia Yeung said that it was interesting and gratifying to see how Hong Kong directorial skills and sensibilities transpire on the U.S. screens. She urged the audience to continue to support Hong Kong movies. She also thanked the organizer of the Boston Asian American Film Festival for selecting choosing the action- thriller to launch its annual film extravaganza.

The latest movie was executive produced by Martin Scorsese, who received . The latter had got multiple Oscar and Golden Globe awards for “The Departed” (2006), which was a remake of Andrew Mr. Lau’s “Infernal Affairs” (2002). Mr. Lau flew all the way from Hong Kong to New York’s Chinatown in the past year to recruit the cast members. The screenplay was co-written by Hong Kong director Andrew Loo and New York-based filmmaker Michael Di Jiacomo.

Shot in Brooklyn and Queens, and based on a true story, The “Dragons” is an action- thriller about Asian gangs in New York in the 1980s, when immigrants from China and elsewhere streamed into the U.S. Director Mr. Lau said he would like the audience to rethink the meaning of the American Dream after watching the movie.

The movie was released publicly in U.S. theaters on October 24.
