Indonesian President visits Hong Kong

Indonesia will foster closer cultural ties with Hong Kong under an MOU concluded during the first visit of the President of Indonesia Joko Widodo to Hong Kong (May 1). Hong Kong Chief Executive C Y Leung met President Widodo and exchanged views on issues of mutual concern. Mr. Leung highlighted that the Belt and Road Initiative would bring about enormous development potential for Hong Kong and ASEAN countries such as Indonesia. 

Enhancing cooperation in wine-related business

Hong Kong has enhanced cooperation in wine and Champagne-related education and training, culinary arts, tourism and trading activities, with the signing of an MOU with two Presidents of Comité Champagne of France, Jean-Marie Barillère and Maxime Toubart. Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Gregory So said that the MOU recognizes Hong Kong as Asia's wine hub. Hong Kong ranked second in Asia and 14th worldwide among export markets for Champagne in 2016.

Financial Secretary meets Asian Development Bank President

Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan met with the President of the Asian Development Bank Takehiko Nakao during the 50th Annual Meeting of the ADB in Yokohama, Japan (May 5). Mr. Chan said that the Infrastructure Financing Facilitation Office under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority is working with key stakeholders in providing a platform for information exchange and experience sharing, thereby facilitating infrastructure investments and their financing.

Disney Explorers Lodge opens

Hong Kong Disneyland has opened its third hotel, the 750-room Disney Explorers Lodge, providing more options for guests. Following the recent funding approval from the Legislative Council, the theme park is set to expand, increasing the number of themed areas from seven to nine, and the total number of attractions growing from about 110 to over 130. It will be the first Disneyland park in the world featuring “Frozen” and “Marvel Superheroes” themed areas when completed in 2023.

Hong Kong Rugby Champions to face off against Americans

The winning men and women teams of the inaugural Hong Kong District Sevens Tournament will be in New York this summer to face off against top teams in the American Northeast. The men's team from Sai Kung and the women's team from Yuen Long won the honor of participating in the Hell Gate Sevens Tournament to be held on Randall’s Island, New York (July 8). The tournament is sponsored by HKETONY.

“Inspirational Liaisons – Encore” at Carnegie Hall

Hong Kong-based musicians will be performing at a concert “Inspirational Liaisons – Encore” at Carnegie Hall (June 11), bringing a repertoire of works including “Vaughan Williams Songs of Travel”, “Ravel Sonata in G for violin and piano” and “Gershwin Three Preludes”. Hong Kong and its Basic Law

The Basic Law (BL) is the constitutional document of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). Put into effect on July 1, 1997, it enshrines within a legal document the important concept of “One Country, Two Systems". 

Q: Are Mainland laws applicable to Hong Kong?

A: Article 18(2) of the Basic Law provides for application of national laws in the HKSAR. Such national laws as applied in the HKSAR shall be listed in Annex III to the Basic Law. Currently, a total of 12 national laws are so listed in Annex III, all of which concern matters outside the limits of the HKSAR's autonomy. They include resolutions and laws on the capital, calendar, national anthem, national flag, national day, national emblem, territorial sea and contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, nationality, garrisoning, diplomatic and consular privileges and immunities and judicial immunity of assets of foreign central banks.
