Professor Kok-wai Cheah of Hong Kong Baptist University won the Grand Prix Award at the 44th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva for his process of reinforcing glass screens to avoid cracks and scratches by applying a thin layer of sapphire.

The international jury of 82 specialists chose the sapphire screen coat as the best invention of the exhibition.

The organizers noted that the method could be used to treat all kinds of glass surfaces. A very thin layer is enough to gaurantee excellent protection comparable to that of a block of sapphire, and does not diminish the screen’s transperancy, because optical transmission is very near to that of glass, they added.
