HKETONY's rugby tourney hits record numbers

Boston's Mystic River I team clinches the men's Northeast 7s Championship series title.

Presented by Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY) for the first time, the 2016 Hell Gate Sevens Rugby Tournament drew to a successful close at Randall’s Island on July 9, with a record 60 teams participating from cities on the East Coast.

More than 1,000 rugby fans filled the stands at several fields, including the designated Hong Kong Field, to cheer for their favorite teams. The weather was particularly kind – cloudy and breezy without any rain. Players and spectators posed for photos with life-size illustrations of the Hong Kong Sevens, provided by HKETONY.

The highlight of the tournament was the men’s Northeast 7s Championship series, one of four qualifier tournaments for the USA Rugby 7s National Championships. Boston’s Mystic River I triumphed over seven teams to clinch the title.

New Jersey’s Princeton Athletic Club and New York’s Old Blue 1 are the champions of the men’s and women’s Empire GU 7s Series, respectively. In the high school divisions, Play Rugby USA from New York won the boys’ title and Morris from New Jersey won the girls’ championship.

Director of HKETONY Steve Barclay watched the rugby action in person.  He congratulated the teams, as well as the Village Lions Rugby Football Club, for a job well done.

New York's Old Blue 1 beats out seven teams to be the champion of the women's Empire GU 7s Series.
