Dragons awakened
for New York festival

HKETONY Director Steve Barclay (third left) with Mitchell Sivler (first left), Parks Commissioner of New York City and Henry Wan (second left), Chairman of the HKDBF-NY attend the eye-dotting ceremony for the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York.

Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York (HKETONY) Steve Barclay and guests officiated at a dragon boat eye-dotting ceremony in Central Park on July 14 and rang the New York Stock Exchange closing bell on July 28 to usher in the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York. The festival will be held August 6-7 in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

More than 200 teams from different sectors, including business, government, educational and other social-service institutions, are expected to compete at the festival’s 26th edition for cash and prizes, including round-trip tickets to Hong Kong.

There will be booths giving demonstrations as well as performances by some of New York’s multicultural artists to keep families entertained throughout the weekend.

HKETONY is the festival’s title sponsor. This year the HKETONY donated six new dragon boats that will be used during the festivities.

To promote the upcoming dragon boat festival, Mr. Barclay and guests ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

Mr. Barclay and guests paddled around Central Park Lake in one of the dragon boats.
