Rugby fans celebrate sevens in Rio Olympics

Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York Steve Barclay welcomed guests to the special viewing event of the highly anticipated return of rugby to the Summer Olympics.

Rugby enthusiasts gathered on August 9 to celebrate the national teams competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics, at a special New York viewing event sponsored by Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York, in partnership with a number of rugby organizations.

The festivities marked the much anticipated return of rugby to the Olympics. The “sevens”  variant consists of two halves of seven minutes with a two-minute halftime break, as opposed to the traditional 80-minute rugby game.

The highly entertaining and fast-paced rugby sevens has been a premiere sporting event in Hong Kong for more than 40 years.

More than 100 rugby enthusiasts from various professional sectors attended the event, with a few lucky guests winning prizes consisting of invaluable mementos, such as signed jersey and ball by Team USA, as well as official match ball and posters signed by all 28 team captains from the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens.

Lucky draw prizes included autographed jerseys and balls.
