NY dragon boat festival raises funds for local charities

Director of HKETONY Steve Barclay (back row, wearing yellow tie) and festival chairman Henry Wan (back row, third from left) join representatives from the charity boat race teams and the charity recipients.

Participants in the 2016 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York charity race raised US$12,500 to benefit five local New York nonprofits.

A record five teams took part in the charity race, including Cathay Bank, DCH Auto Group, Flushing Bank, HSBC and Shanghai Commercial Bank. Race winner DCH Auto Group’s designated charity, the Chinatown Health Clinic Foundation, was awarded US$4,500.

The remaining US$8,000 was split among the other four charities. They are the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Academy (St. Michael's School), Selfhelp Community Services, Queens Botanical Garden and Asian Americans for Equality.

Over the past 26 years, the festival has raised more than $250,000 from its charity boat races to support local nonprofit organizations. Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY) is the title sponsor of the annual festival.
