Atlanta dragon boat races

The 21st annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Atlanta saw a record turnout of more than 8,000 spectators and participants, who came to cheer on the record 80 teams from Georgia and beyond on September 10.

This was the first time in the festival’s history that 80 teams participated, as previous festivals had capped the team participation at 72.

Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY) Steve Barclay said the event was a way to showcase Hong Kong culture and for Georgians to engage in a fun team sport. He said the festival also provided an opportunity to highlight Hong Kong’s unique history and culture to the general public.

Held at Lake Lanier, a 1996 Summer Olympics site, the festival featured exhilarating races, a traditional eye-dotting ceremony to awaken the dragons and cultural performances. HKETONY has been a title sponsor of the event since 1995.
