Hong Kong music director to lead the New York Philharmonic

Hong Kong Philharmonic's music director Jaap van Zweden will lead the New York Philharmonic in the 2018-19 season.

Hong Kong Philharmonic's (HK Phil) music director Jaap van Zweden will lead the New York Philharmonic (NY Phil) starting in the 2018-19 season. He will succeed Alan Gilbert who will step down at the end of the 2016/17 season.

Mr. van Zweden has been at the helm of the HK Phil since 2012 and is one of today’s most sought-after conductors.

“I am thrilled to be embarking on this new adventure with the New York Philharmonic,” he said. “Both the NY Phil and HK Phil are unique groups of highly talented musicians. It’s such an honor to be able to work with them both. Two great cities, and two great orchestras!”

Chair of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society Y.S. Liu said this appointment further proves the high quality of his work, and it is an honor and privilege for the HK Phil to have a conductor of this caliber as our music director.”

Amsterdam-born van Zweden, age 55, will continue his directorship of the HK Phil until the summer of 2019.
