The Hong Kong International Arbitration Center (HKIAC) collaborated with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York and the New York International Arbitration Center (NYIAC) to organize a seminar and mock arbitration in New York City on June 12. Speakers at the event promoted Hong Kong as Asia’s premier location for dispute resolution and explained the HKIAC’s new rules. The event attracted more than 30 senior legal and arbitration professionals.
Welcoming the guests and introducing all the speakers was Executive Director of NYIAC Alexandra Dosman. Secretary General of the HKIAC Chiann Bao presented an overview of her organization and its 2013 revised rules while Counsel at HKIAC James Chun gave an update on the growing number of cases the center has been receiving. He highlighted the increasing cases on domain name and financial disputes.
In the past year, an increasing number of countries have been selecting Hong Kong as their venue for arbitration, including the United States, India as well as several African countries. Two distinguished lawyers — Stephen Maloy, senior advisor at ZICOlaw, and Craig Celniker, partner at Morrison & Foerster (Hong Kong) — also joined the panel to speak about their experience with HKIAC.
A mock arbitration session was also conducted to demonstrate several of the new rule changes at HKIAC. The arbitration session was conducted by three senior lawyers: James Berger, partner at King & Spalding; John Fellas, partner at Hughes, Hubbard & Reed; and Claudia Salomon, partner at Latham & Watkins.
The seminar was part of a global HKIAC roadshow this year, with other seminars held in Germany, London, Hong Kong and Manila.
