The interest in Hong Kong as the freest economy and its latest role as China’s premier offshore renminbi center grew among American university students after attending talks by Director of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office New York Anita Chan.
Speaking to an MBA class of 30 students at Baruch College in New York City and a group of 80 students at Brown University in Providence, R.I., on April 6 and April 11, respectively, the director pointed out the strengths of Hong Kong that had made it the freest economy in the world for the 17th consecutive year, as ranked by the Heritage Foundation.
She expounded on the advantages of Hong Kong making it possible for the yuan settlement business and investment products to flourish.
“Hong Kong is uniquely well placed to be China’s testing ground for the internationalization of the Chinese currency to take place in a safe and orderly manner,” she said.
Ms. Chan also cited U.S. Nobel laureate Milton Friedman, who time and again regarded Hong Kong as the epitome of free- economy principles.
She also had an interactive exchange with students from New York University, who visited her at the Hong Kong offices in New York on April 7.
The vibrant, vigorous and cosmopolitan features of the city were also brought to life through a three-minute “Faces of Hong Kong” video screened during the talks by Ms. Chan. The video featured Hong Kong mega-star Chow Yun-fat and entrepreneur Allan Zeman talking about their fond memories and their passions for Hong Kong.
