Contemporary Hong Kong through a Chicago lens

Monica Chen, director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York, opened the “Contemporary Hong Kong Through a Chicago Lens” exhibition at Northwestern University on May 1.

A multimedia exhibition featuring contemporary Hong Kong through the eyes of Chicagoans was launched May 1 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Opening the exhibition, Director of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office, New York (HKETONY) Monica Chen said, "This multimedia exhibition, comprising photographs, video and blog posts, introduces Hong Kong through the eyes of five students from Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University, who were on a sponsored visit to Hong Kong by the HKETONY.

"As you can see from the photographs, videos and blog posts, they have made good use of their time exploring the city,” she said. “They met and interviewed officials, business people and common folks on the street. They also rubbed shoulders with movie stars at the Asian Film Awards and even managed to score tickets and backstage passes to the Coldplay concert in Hong Kong."

The video, produced by the Medill students, features interviews with officials from Invest Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, who spoke of Hong Kong as a gateway to China and the various virtues of doing business in the territory, including its level playing field and the government’s openness and transparency.

The exhibition is one of the events of the Hong Kong Comes to Chicago 2009 Festival, held in conjunction with Chicago's current monthlong celebration of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month.

Ms. Chen said these programs will introduce Chicagoans to the economically and culturally vibrant city that is known as Asia's world city.

"We hope that you will take the opportunity to see the Hong Kong movies, check out the ‘This is Hong Kong’ exhibition and gallery talks at the Chicago Cultural Center and attend the music performance featuring a Chinese music ensemble with Chicago's Fulcrum Point New Music Project during this monthlong festival,” she said.

“I hope all of you will have the opportunity to visit Hong Kong soon.”

The “Contemporary Hong Kong Through a Chicago Lens” exhibition at the McCormick Tribune Center Forum at Northwestern University runs from May 1-15. Thereafter, it will be incorporated into various events in downtown Chicago.
