The “New York Celebrates Hong Kong 2008” festival is a month-long celebration of Hong Kong’s creativity and entrepreneurship. The festival, which includes events featuring local and international artists, showcases Hong Kong through art exhibits, opera, dance performances and educational symposiums throughout New York City. The festival offers an opportunity to learn about the evolving “modern heritage” of the continuously vibrant and transformative city of Hong Kong.

The festival is hosted by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office New York and supported by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Video vignettes highlighting the “New York Celebrates Hong Kong 2008” festival were also screened in New York’s famous yellow taxi cabs in the month of October.

Hong Kong Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing was in town to help kick off this media campaign for the festival.

On arrival at the NBC headquarters at Rockefeller Center where an official ceremony was held to launch the media campaign, Mr. Tsang was greeted by Executive Vice President of WNBC Mark Lund, Vice President, WNBC, Robert Harnaga and Director, NBC Everywhere, Michael Mongelluzo and President and General Manager of WNBC Tom O’Brien.

Mr. Tsang also rode in a New York taxi cab to view the 45-second vignette highlighting the “New York Celebrates Hong Kong 2008” festival after meeting with executives from NBC Universal and touring the NBC Studios at Rockefeller Center.

NBC Universal was the official broadcaster for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. It partnered with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office to broadcast a 30-minute program “Hong Kong Reins” before the start of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, showcasing Hong Kong as an equine capital and the perfect host for the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events.

On October 10, Mr. Tsang also visited the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, a high school offering a specialized program in the arts as well as a full academic curriculum. He met with principal Donna Finn to learn more about the school’s program, and the two exchanged views on issues related to the propagation of art and culture.

While visiting the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, Mr. Tsang also visited a workshop for about 150 students conducted by members of the Ming Chee Sing Chinese Opera Company. The workshop covered the history of Cantonese opera and included a short demonstration and introduction of the leads of the opera company Koi Ming-Fai and Ng May-Ying, as well as a question-and-answer session.

The workshop was part of the program under “New York Celebrates Hong Kong” and was intended to offer an appreciation of the art form on a deeper level.
