Secretary for Development officiates at global design lecture

Hong Kong Secretary for Development Carrie Lam said Hong Kong’s East-meets-West history, past and present economic accomplishments and current designation as China’s Special Administrative Region make it a unique city for creativity.

On October 16, Hong Kong Secretary for Development Carrie Lam officiated at the lecture “Asian Arts and Culture — A New Vision: Chinese Spirit, Global Design” at the Asia Society in New York, marking another event in the “New York Celebrates Hong Kong 2008” festival.

In her introductory remarks, Mrs. Lam said, “As a city, Hong Kong holds a special place on the global stage. Its East-meets-West history, past and present economic accomplishments and current designation as China’s Special Administrative Region renders Hong Kong a unique city for creativity.”

The lecture featured internationally-acclaimed Hong Kong designer Eric Chan and architect/designer Calvin Tsao discussing the role of Asian arts and culture in contemporary society, the relationship between the individual and community, heritage and globalization, as well as the synergies between economic growth and cultural enterprises.

They shared how their Chinese heritage inspired them in their design work and also illustrated in a broader perspective how Hong Kong talents are faring in the international arena.

The discussion attracted more than 100 people from New York’s design industry and urban planning sector to exchange views and visions on global design.

The event, co-organized by Hong Kong Design Centre, is part of The Ka-Yin Lo Distinguished Program Series.

The “New York Celebrates Hong Kong 2008” festival, organized by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office New York, is a month-long celebration throughout New York of Hong Kong’s creativity and entrepreneurship. The festival, which includes events featuring local and international artists, showcases Hong Kong’s cultural and economic vitality. Through art exhibits, opera and dance performances and educational symposiums, the festival offers an opportunity to learn about the evolving “modern heritage” of the continuously vibrant and transformative city of Hong Kong. The festival is supported by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
