The Harvard Film Archives hosted a retrospective film series “Shaw Scope: A History of the Shaw Bros. Studios,” showcasing classics from Shaw Bros. Studios on the big screen for fans and film aficionados from May 31-June 7. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York (HKETONY) was a sponsor of this film series. Director of HKETONY Monica Chen and the Chief Information Officer of HKETONY Kelly So attended the film screening of "The New One-Armed Swordsman" on June 6.
The Shaw Bros. Studio is the most famous of the classically organized motion picture production companies in Hong Kong. It exerted an indelible influence on the film industry in Hong Kong, as well as on filmmakers around the world. The studio’s films were seen worldwide and became a significant part of global popular cinema. Aside from classic martial arts films, Shaw Bros. produced a rich array of genres, including accomplished melodramas, musicals, supernatural thrillers, epic costume dramas and filmed opera.
Movies featured in the series include The Five Venoms (Wu Du), King Boxer (Tianxia Diyi Quan), The Love Eterne (Liang Shanbo yü Zhu Yingtai), The New One-Armed Swordsman (Xin Dubi Daowang) and Hong Kong Nocturne (Xiangjiang Huayue Ye).
