Dragon boat festivals held in Miami and Boston
More than 1,000 participants took part in races in the 5th annual Miami Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, held May 31 at Brickell Key in Miami. Speaking at the festival’s opening ceremony, Hong Kong Commissioner of Economic and Trade Affairs in the United States Margaret Fong said the event’s sense of energy and anticipation were gentle reminders of the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing.
“It is the first time the Games are held on Chinese soil,” said Miss Fong. “Hong Kong is honored and proud to be the co-host city for the Equestrian Events.” She noted the territory has devoted considerable time and effort to ensure that world-class facilities and services will be in place for the events.
Approximately 25,000 spectators attended the Miami festival, organized by the Miami Overseas Chinese Association. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York is the founding sponsor of the event.
On June 8, the 29th annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival of Boston was held on the Charles River, attracting 32 teams competing in four categories: open, mixed, corporate and women’s. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York sponsored this event as well.
At both events, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York promoted Hong Kong as a co-host city of the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events. The office’s booth, adorned with equestrian bunting and banners, also featured an eight-panel exhibition showcasing the upcoming equestrian events in Hong Kong.
