Weather team oversees equestrian events
The Hong Kong Observatory deployed a team of meteorologists to the Olympic Equestrian Events to inform officials and visitors of weather conditions during the August 9-21 competition.
The observatory’s assistant director of forecasting and warning services, Wai Hon-gor, said the team monitored the venues’ temperature, humidity, wind, rainfall and heat stress indexes round-the-clock. The meteorologists were stationed at the venues and the Observatory Forecasting Office.
To ensure accurate measurements of heat stress, the observatory used a specially designed “wet-bulb globe temperature measurement system,” which measured air temperature, natural wet-bulb temperature and black-globe temperature, representing the combined effect of temperature, humidity, wind and solar radiation.
The forecasters issued detailed, three-day weather forecasts for the competition venues four times a day, while seven-day forecasts were provided to facilitate advance planning of the events.
Mr. Wai said the weather information was available online to the Equestrian Company and government departments supporting the Equestrian Events.
