Visitor arrivals up 16.2% in January
Figures released by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) show that visitor arrivals in January reached 2,518,566, or a 16.2% increase year-on-year.
The achievement is especially notable as it represents all-round performance of markets worldwide. Arrivals from non-Mainland market regions enjoyed a double-digit gain of 12.6%.
Mainland China continues to be Hong Kong’s leading source market, with arrivals up 19.1% in January to reach 1,441,667. Of these visitors, 57.8% visited Hong Kong under the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS), a 28.4% year-on-year increase. The number has been growing as more and more Mainland visitors make short visits to Hong Kong, riding on the convenience offered by the IVS.
Of the arrivals in January, 57.2% were from mainland China, while other markets accounted for more than 40%, as shown below:

Hotel occupancy across all categories of hotels in January reached 87%, two percentage points higher than in January 2007. The average achieved hotel room rate across all hotel categories was US$159.61, up 5.7% compared to a year earlier.
