Two new giant pandas to join Hong Kong pair

Chief Secretary for Administration Rafael Hui meets giant pandas at the China Conservation & Research Center for the Giant Panda at Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan.

The Central Government plans to give Hong Kong a pair of giant pandas as a gift to mark the 10th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Visiting the China Conservation & Research Center for the Giant Panda at Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan on March 9, Hong Kong Chief Secretary for Administration Rafael Hui said the HKSAR government is deeply grateful to the Central Government for the gift, adding that rare giant pandas are China’s national treasures and Hong Kong is honored to receive them.

Mr. Hui said the visit to Sichuan enabled the Hong Kong delegation to better understand the conservation of giant pandas and the need to prepare for their arrival.

The two new pandas, together with An An and Jia Jia, which were presented to Hong Kong in 1999, will reside at Ocean Park.

Mr. Hui visited the reserve with Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Carrie Lam and Ocean Park representatives.
