Hong Kong remains world’s freest economy, says report
Hong Kong remains the world’s freest economy, according to the Economic Freedom of the World: 2007 Annual Report released by the Cato Institute on September 4. It is the 11th consecutive year Hong Kong has topped the ranking.

Asian Financial Forum concludes successfully
The Asian Financial Forum successfully concluded on September 21, with enthusiastic exchanges among local, mainland China and overseas financial services leaders and experts.

The forum, themed “Leveraging New Opportunities, Advancing Regional Stability,” is the first event of its kind hosted by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government to highlight and reinforce Hong Kong’s prestige as an international financial center.

Chief Executive-U.S. Secretary of State meet to discuss issues
Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Sydney on September 7, ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders Meeting.

During the cordial 20-minute session, they exchanged views on a range of issues covering the latest social, political and economic developments in Hong Kong.

Chief Executive speaks about trade and climate change at APEC meeting
Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang called on key players of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to resolve their differences for a breakthrough at the Doha Development Agenda negotiations.

Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders meeting in Sydney on September 8, Mr. Tsang said, “Hong Kong, China, as always, will participate actively in the negotiations, and we look forward to substantive and intensive discussion in the WTO meetings in September and beyond.”

Successful public prosecution system fundamental to rule of law
A successful public prosecution system is fundamental to the rule of law, said Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang. Hence, Hong Kong places great emphasis on promoting a prosecution service that is modern, just and receptive to the concerns of the community.

Mr. Tsang addressed some 450 participants at the opening ceremony of the 12th Annual Conference and General Meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) on September 17.

Views sought on proposed West Kowloon Cultural District
On September 12, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released the recommendation report of the Consultative Committee (CC) on the Core Arts and Cultural Facilities of the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD). It also started a three-month public engagement exercise to explain the recommendations and to solicit views from the public. 

Hong Kong shipping register hits new tonnage mark
The cargo throughput of Hong Kong’s port continues to increase, and the gross tonnage of ships registered in Hong Kong now tops 35 million, said Director of Marine Roger Tupper.

Speaking at the 17th meeting of the Port State Control Committee of the Tokyo Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Hong Kong on September 3, Mr. Tupper affirmed that Hong Kong will continue to take an active role in port state control and activities of the Tokyo MOU.

Insurance industry's underwriting profits fall, premiums grow
Overall underwriting profits in the insurance industry fell to US$133.2 million in the first half of 2007, down 23.6% compared to the same period last year, according to the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance.

During the same period, gross and net premiums grew 6.7% to US$1.66 billion and 5.9% to US$1.19 billion, respectively.
