Fong makes stops in Delaware, Philadelphia and Florida

Margaret Fong, Hong Kong Commissioner for Economic and Trade Affairs, USA, made her first official visit to the Sunshine State in early May, calling on Florida Gov. Charlie Crist at the Tallahassee State Capitol and speaking at a business roundtable session in Miami.

During her meeting with Gov. Crist, Miss Fong provided an update on Hong Kong’s economic performance and cruise terminal project. She also met with senior officials of the Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development during her visit.

In Miami, Miss Fong spoke at a roundtable luncheon co-hosted by the Florida-China Association, which was attended by more than 20 senior executives from the Greater Miami area, including representatives of the major business chambers, as well as the various economic development agencies in the area. She also officiated at the opening ceremony of the Miami Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival on May 5 and highlighted the 10th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR).

In mid-April, Miss Fong visited Wilmington, Del., and Philadelphia on her first official visit to both cities, where she met with various government and business officials.

Miss Fong briefed business executives on the latest situation in Hong Kong, the developments since the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR in 1997 and the territory’s strengths as the stepping stone and premier gateway for international businesses to tap the Mainland Chinese market. The Wilmington luncheon was co-hosted by the World Trade Center Delaware, while the Philadelphia event was co-hosted by the World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia.

In Wilmington, Miss Fong also met with Jennifer Davis, director of Delaware’s Office of Management and Budget, exchanging views on port development and the development of high-tech industries in Hong Kong and Delaware.

Miss Fong also visited the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania during her visit to Philadelphia.
