New York Celebrates Hong Kong 2008 Festival

October 1st marks the launch of New York Celebrates Hong Kong 2008, a month-long celebration throughout New York City of Hong Kong’s creativity and entrepreneurship. The festival, which includes events featuring local and international artists, showcases Hong Kong’s cultural and economic vitality. Through art exhibits, opera and dance performances and educational symposiums, the festival offers an opportunity to learn about the evolving “modern heritage” of a continuously vibrant and transformative city. The festival is hosted by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York and supported by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Name: Hong Kong Panorama: A Rhapsody of Cantonese Opera
Organization: Ming Chee Sing Chinese Opera

Location: Queens Theatre in the Park
Overview: Formed in 1990, the Ming Chee Sing Chinese Opera is currently one of the largest Cantonese opera companies in Hong Kong. The performances by Ming Chee Sing Chinese Opera troupe will celebrate the traditional art form of Cantonese opera with a captivating selection of various pieces of works from famous plays which will bring New York audience on a fascinating journey of popular and romantic Chinese legends. With 85 troupe members, this magnificent company has performed to high critical acclaim in China, Singapore, Australia, England and the United States.

Name Cantonese Opera Workshop/Discussion

Location: Auditorium at Parsons The New School for Design (560 Seventh Avenue)
Overview: Cantonese opera is a fine art that includes fluid and graceful body movements and expressions. The drama in any opera comes from the elaborate and flamboyant costumes, exquisite wigs and colorful make-up worn by the actors. This discussion/workshop will allow audiences to get fully immersed in Cantonese opera and participants will be introduced to its symbolism, connotations, costumes, movements and sign languages. Scenes from various operas will be shown.

Name: The Skyscraper Museum International Symposium:
Vertical Density | Sustainable Solutions

Overview: In conjunction with the Vertical Cities: Hong Kong | New York exhibition, The Skyscraper Museum has organized an international symposium examining the dramatic vertical urbanism of Hong Kong and exploring comparisons with New York City. Three separate programs will be held in partnership with The Regional Plan Association, The New School's India China Institute and The Tishman Environment and Design Center. In addition to the symposium, receptions will be held offering speakers and guests an opportunity to meet their professional counterparts. Registration is now open for members of The Skyscraper Museum, RPA, all students and New School faculty. Registration will open October 1, 2008 for the general public. All events are free, though space is limited.

Xing Liang graduated in classical dance division from the Beijing Dance Academy in 1991 and has won numerous awards.

Overview: The internationally acclaimed City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) from Hong Kong is renowned for the distinctive and yet diverse style of its programs. This performance is a sophisticated modern dance that unfolds as an array of contrasting theatrical visions from China's past and present.

Overview: Internationally acclaimed designer Eric Chan and architect/designer Calvin Tsao discuss design in a global environment and how a Chinese heritage inspires in new, perhaps unexpected ways. Eric Chan, founder of the New York-based ECCO Design, is hailed by Business Week as "one of the new breed of ingenious American designers.” Calvin Tsao is a founding partner of the award-winning design firm TsAO & McKOWN. The discussion will be moderated by Susan Szenasy, Chief Editor, Metropolis Magazine.
